[edit]From Late Middle High German schranc, from Old High German scranc, from Proto-West Germanic *skrank, from Proto-Germanic *skrankaz (“grid, barrier”), probably derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to bend, turn”).[1] Cognate with German Low German Schrank (“barrier, barricade”).
